I had just spent a great weekend in Chicago with some of my favorite people in the world, the original “Image Group” models from back in the day in Iowa. We had all come together to see Tiana dance on the Britney Spears tour. We had a really special time together, they had all experienced their high school years together and Tiana was like their little sister, so to see her up on stage performing on a major world tour, was magical. We had a fun reunion and of course, I also did some scouting while we were at the concert.
The first model I ever placed years and years ago was a beautiful young teenager from Iowa, Sarah Olson. She has remained a friend through the years. I have always loved her strength of spirit, sense of humor, and drive and work ethic. She got a kick out of watching me scout and she told me she would keep her eyes open when she is out and about.
Sarah called after her flight home to Denver. She saw an interesting beauty on her flight home, taller than the friends she was traveling with on her school trip, and she decided she needed to say something to her. She grabbed a piece of paper, wrote down our information, and told her she should really contact us…she may have the potential to be a model.
The girls name was Bethany Terry. We ended up hearing from her parents, they arranged a trip to St. Louis (they are from Ohio), and we met them for dinner at one of our favorite spots, Katie’s Pizza. Her family was delightful, so open, incredibly supportive of their daughter, and we discussed developing her over time, having her grow her hair, getting involved in some dance classes back home for poise and body movement, and we would do some tests here and she could participate in St Louis Fashion Week for a little experience in the process. We waited for her braces to come off and the time had come to move forward.
Bethany’s beauty is so unique and her personality is as well. She is one-of-a-kind and so much fun to be around. Timing is everything and when it all came together for her, it was quite a whirlwind. She went to New York for what we thought was few days right before shows last season. The response was so positive that not only did she stay in New York through Fashion Week and have a great first season in New York, she went on to Milan and Paris, making a strong mark as a new face on the radar. It was an incredible show season including shows like Prada, Marni, and Kenzo and it’s just the beginning.
Thanks to Sarah (Olson) Hitman for stepping outside her comfort zone and telling an adorable young Bethany Terry that she thought she may have what we were looking for. It literally changed the direction of a very special young woman’s life. It doesn’t get much better than that
